What Is Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing has been around since the late 1990s when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos launched his first online store that allowed affiliates to promote products on the site and earn commissions based upon sales generated by visitors who clicked on those links.
"Amazon Associates" was one of the earliest affiliate programs which ran from 1998 until 2002, but it wasn't until 2004 that the program became successful enough for many other companies to jump into the fray (and make millions).
The big difference between traditional advertising and affiliate marketing is that advertisers pay an agency or company to advertise its product while affiliates receive compensation for bringing customers to the advertiser’s website. In return for promoting another person or business' products, the affiliate receives a percentage of all revenue made by anyone visiting the promoted page.
In order to be eligible to participate in affiliate marketing there must be two parties involved - the merchant selling the goods and the affiliate offering promotion of said item(s) via a third party. The commission rate varies depending on the type of offer being sold -- eBooks and digital downloads generally command higher rates than physical items such as clothing or electronics, while search engine optimization commands lower fees due to the fact that most people find information using Google rather than directly searching for it.

I'll leave it to the experts on internet marketing to try to explain what affiliate marketing means, but I can tell you that there's no shortage of people who will do so. In fact, if you're looking into getting involved with affiliate marketing, chances are good that someone has already tried to sell you on it as an idea by now. It's also possible that they've told you about something called "affiliates" but haven't explained exactly how these things work -- which leads us right back to my opening question...
A direct response agency (sometimes referred to as DRA) is a business that specializes in selling advertising space directly to advertisers. They don't make any money from affiliates like ShareASale, CJ Affiliate or Commission Junction (they all use one another), instead making their profit through commissions paid out by the advertiser after the sale. The most common types of ads sold by DRAs include banner ads, text links, e-mail blasts, popups, and display advertisements.
The reason why they call themselves "direct" instead of "affiliate" is because those terms are generally used to refer to relationships between two parties where one party gets paid based upon sales made by the other. For example, when you buy a book at Amazon.com, you aren't buying anything from them directly -- instead, you're using an affiliate link provided by BookBub, which allows the publisher to get paid when you click their link and purchase the product.
So, if we consider ourselves affiliates, what would be our relationship to a direct response agency? Well, we'd essentially be giving them permission to advertise through our content (i.e., linking to our articles, videos, etc.) We wouldn't necessarily see any income generated from doing so, nor would we receive any sort of cut of whatever revenue was produced. Instead, we'd just be providing free exposure to potential customers.
In contrast to the above scenario, a direct marketing campaign is usually run by a company itself rather than being the result of an affiliate agreement. Typically, companies hire a professional marketer who develops a strategy around collecting information about individuals' interests and desires. This data is often collected via surveys, focus groups, or other methods. Then, once enough information has been gathered, the marketers send bulk emails to targeted audiences inviting them to take action. These actions could range from signing up for newsletters or purchasing products, but more likely fall under the category of "consulting." Examples of popular consulting services include weight loss plans, financial planning, home improvement projects, and even diet pills.
Here's the thing though: while many businesses offer "free consultations," very few actually pay consultants for every single consultation they conduct. Most often, consultants are hired only for large campaigns, such as email blast campaigns, which require high volumes of traffic and therefore higher salaries for each consultant responsible. On top of that, consultants typically need to spend time researching different markets before sending out their initial invitations, meaning they lose valuable time during the entire process. So, although consultants might charge $500 per hour, they probably won't end up bringing in much cash for their employers overall.
Affiliated media refers to sites that allow users to submit posts containing promotional material without receiving any compensation. Usually, these websites collect user submissions in exchange for allowing visitors to read and comment on them. Because these sites provide little value beyond simply promoting the submitted content, they are considered poor quality and are consequently shunned by search engines. Many of these websites operate similarly to forums -- anyone can post content, but only registered members can respond to others' comments. Some of these sites go further still by offering a reward system for submitting new content, such as points that can be exchanged for prizes.
You may think that this sounds pretty similar to how traditional press releases are distributed today, except that they're written and edited by professionals and published on reputable news outlets. What makes these sites unique is that the editors rarely edit the content. As long as they adhere to certain guidelines regarding formatting and wording, they can publish almost anything. And since they don't take payment for publishing stories, they don't care whether the story is true or false. That said, it must be noted that some of these publications are completely automated and contain no human editorial oversight whatsoever.
Because of this lack of quality control, affiliate marketers should avoid using these sites to promote their own content unless they wish to risk appearing fraudulent. There are several well-known examples of spammy affiliate networks found on these sites, including MySparky.com, WebmasterWorld.com, and iGetFreeSamples.com. Even worse, some of these sites actively encourage affiliates to create fake accounts and sign up for promotions that never exist.
While these sites serve as useful resources for finding relevant information, they shouldn't be relied upon to distribute your content. While they may seem attractive due to their low cost and easy setup, they're far less reliable than conventional publishers.
Affiliated code refers to the HTML markup that identifies specific web pages as sponsored links. When readers visit a page with associated codes, they know that the site is trying to drive traffic to its own site. Since Google doesn't want to penalize legitimate sites for displaying sponsored links, it provides special treatment to those who follow proper practices.
For example, let's say you publish an article on health issues related to pregnancy. You decide to put this article on a blog that hosts thousands of other articles across dozens of categories. Now suppose that this same blog contains an affiliate code within the title element of the article. After clicking on the headline, readers land on the actual article. However, underneath the heading, there is a small gray box stating that the article was brought to you by [name] Company, Inc. By following standard procedures, the reader knows that the contents of the article were created specifically for that particular brand, and that neither the author nor the publisher received any compensation for writing it.
Google recognizes this distinction and treats both sides equally. Therefore, if you find yourself wanting to share information about your favorite brands, feel free to utilize affiliate codes whenever applicable. Just remember that you'll want to ensure that your content remains informative and unbiased so that you don't violate any rules set forth by Google.
