While there might be fewer opportunities today than there used to be, affiliate marketing isn't dead yet. There are still plenty of places where you can earn money without having to pay any fees upfront. Here are just a handful of examples:
Amazon Associates Program - One of the oldest affiliate programs around, Amazon offers a wide variety of options. Whether you decide to sign up as an individual seller or join one of the huge affiliate networks like Commission Junction or ShareASale, you'll always receive a commission when someone buys something using your link. The only fee you need to pay upfront is your monthly subscription fee.
Shopify Marketplace – If you already run a small ecommerce store, Shopify has a marketplace specifically designed to connect sellers with buyers who prefer digital goods over physical items. Sellers simply upload their products onto the platform and then allow buyers to browse and purchase them. Once payment is made, each product automatically ships straight to the buyer. A similar option exists for eBay sellers too.
ClickBank - This is another large affiliate network. They currently operate under two brands—CJ & Co., which focuses primarily on selling digital downloads and services, and InfoMarketing, which sells mostly physical items but also includes a number of digital items such as software subscriptions. Both options provide excellent support, especially for beginners.
ShareASale - Another good choice for independent merchants. ShareASale operates similarly to Etsy. Sellers set their prices and can either take payments via PayPal or credit card. Customers then buy the item(s), which ship straight to them after payment is received.
Ebay Partner Network - Ebay has its own affiliate network called the "eBay Partner" program. Similar to Amazon and Shopify, you must first register as an individual seller before becoming eligible. Then, once approved, you can promote your listings to potential buyers. Payment processing takes place entirely within the eBay system. However, since you do have access to customer data, you may want to consider setting up shop on your own site instead.
PayPal Merchant Services - If you already have a merchant account setup with PayPal, you can turn your sales into recurring revenue streams by adding additional products to your inventory. Just remember to keep things simple unless you know exactly what kind of traffic you can expect from your product.
According to Forbes' latest survey of the 50 largest internet retailers, roughly 9% of those surveyed said they had earned $100,000 or more per year as an affiliate marketer. That means that 89% of respondents reported earning less than $10,000 in 2017 alone.
It's no surprise that high-end affiliate programs tend to attract a higher percentage of successful earners because they typically require larger investments to start. Of course, the lower end of the scale is also pretty lucrative. According to the same study, 7% of respondents earned anywhere between $5K-$9K annually. So whether you're hoping to break into the industry or you're building your own brand, you should see some decent returns regardless of which way you go.
Unfortunately, despite being one of the most popular forms of online advertising, affiliate marketing has a very low conversion rate. Only 1% of visitors actually convert into paying customers. Compare that to direct sales channels, where 20%-25% of leads ultimately become customers. In addition, according to Forbes, approximately 80% of people who try affiliate marketing fail completely.
So why does this happen? Well, unlike with direct sales, the majority of people who visit your website aren't actively seeking anything specific. Instead, they're browsing randomly, searching for information on unrelated subjects. When they finally land on a page with a compelling offer, it's usually because they stumbled across the ad accidentally rather than due to intent.
Even though there's almost certainly nothing wrong with trying affiliate marketing, it's probably not the best idea to rely solely on it for income. If your goal is to generate passive cash flow, it would be better to focus your efforts elsewhere.
In short, affiliate marketing works well enough to keep you afloat financially until you can develop your own sustainable source of income. At that point, you won't have to depend on anyone else to stay afloat.
