One example would be promoting Amazon products through a blog post where you include an affiliate link. When readers click that link, you receive 20% of whatever they buy after clicking your link. And that's affiliate marketing.
Another famous example of affiliate marketing is ClickBank. In case you've never heard of them, ClickBank sells digital downloads like ebooks, software etc. They give sellers 90 days free trial period during which they provide full support for every single seller. If you do well, you can eventually become a ClickBank partner and start earning commissions directly from ClickBank instead of going through third party vendors.
Now, I'm sure you're wondering whether affiliate marketing is only limited to digital products. Well, yes and no. There are many ways to make money through affiliate marketing including physical products such as books, CDs, DVDs, furniture etc. But here again, most successful affiliate marketer focus primarily on digital goods rather than physical ones because it's easier to scale quickly and reach new customers.

Usually, the companies pay per lead based upon conversion rate. Although this may seem simpler compared to online affiliate programs, it doesn't guarantee consistent earnings unless you're very patient.
Let's now move onto comparing affiliate marketing with MLM...
I think both affiliate marketing and MLM are great options for making money online. However, I prefer affiliate marketing mainly due to the fact that it is cheaper and less risky compared to MLM. Here are some reasons why:-
1. With affiliate marketing, you only need to invest small amount of capital while MLM requires huge investments upfront.
2. Unlike MLM, affiliate marketing doesn't require recruiting members in order to make money. All you need to do is attract interested prospects and then show them how to make money.
3. As said earlier, affiliate marketing is more scalable than MLM. Since you don't have to recruit people, you can easily expand your operation by hiring virtual assistants to handle customer inquiries.
4. Lastly, affiliate marketing allows you to spend more time focusing on creating valuable content whereas MLM demands lots of your time spent on recruitment activities. For instance, imagine you're running an MLM company wherein you need to go door to door to find new recruits. That will definitely eat away a lot of your precious time.

Let me give you an example. Let's say that you own a local pizza shop. You want to increase sales so you decide to use Facebook ads to promote your pizzas on social networks like Twitter and Instagram. If a user clicks on a link to order a pizza directly through your site, you earn money.
You might see this as a very simple case of affiliate marketing because you've done nothing more than offer up free advertising space on another website. But let's keep going. Now imagine that instead of promoting your pizza via Facebook ads, you create a page called Pizza Hut Recipes where users can learn how to make pizza themselves. The recipes are yours and you get paid whenever a reader purchases them using a special code included in the email newsletter. This would also qualify as affiliate marketing since you've created content which encourages readers to purchase something else.
